Puppy Crate Training – Will the Crate Make Your Puppy Depressed
Getting a new puppy comes with a lot of responsibility.
One of the first major decisions to make is where is your puppy going to sleep? Where is your puppy going to stay when you are away from home? For any of you who have left your new puppy to run amuck in your home while you ran out for a few errands can relate to this.
Puppies don’t know what they’re boundaries are yet, they don’t understand right from wrong and what their limits are.
They will chew on your furniture, urinate on your favorite comforter and tear up the newspaper. Whatever an unattended puppy can get into they will.
Many pet owners will try using a child gate to block of a small area for the puppy to stay, in the kitchen or bathroom. Preferably a room without carpeting for them to urinate on.
Always use a puppy pad. The down side of this is that you will come home to the bottom of your cabinets chewed on. They typically miss the training pad early on.
They love to spill and make a mess of their food and water. I would recommend crate training puppies. Crate training has many benefits. For one, it helps a lot with puppy house training.
They are in a small confined space and typically if they urinate they have to sit in it or near it. This tends to help them learn real fast to hold it until they are let out. Much better than pad training.
It is also a good place for the puppy to sleep at night, they learn how to have regular sleep hours and helps again with puppy house training.
Make sure you get a crate that is suitable to the size of the puppy you are training. They should be able to get up and turn around but not much bigger than that. The metal cage crates are much more suitable for house crate training.
The soft sided crates are cute, but they should be reserved for travel. I myself tried one of these and eventually my puppy chewed his way out. Some people may think crates are cruel or can make the dog depressed. I believe this to be quite to the contrary.
I have seen many dogs happily prance to their kennels when time for bed. It is a safe secure place for them to be. Their own little spot.
Lots of times you will find them laying in their sleeping even when everyone is home and they are allowed out. Dogs like routines and knowing what to expect.
If you are having difficulty with puppy crate training, a good tip is that it never hurts to put a bone in their crate so they have a treat to look forward to.
